Alterations in the nitrogen excretion pattern of chicks infected with Salmonella pullorum.

چکیده
Investigations in our laboratory have established that infection with SalmoneUa pulorum strain CDC 3522/51 results in a decrease in arginine, methionine, glycine and tryptophan in the blood and liver of 1to 3-day old White Leghorn cockerels (Ross et al., 1955a). Subsequent experiments revealed that the administration of arginine within 24 hr following infection produced a marked increase in survival time of the chicks (Ross et al., 1955b). The investigations reported here suggest that the protection afforded by arginine during infection is accomplished through the increased synthesis of urea via the ornithine-citrulline cycle. Urea synthesis represents the principal pathway of nitrogen excretion during the early stages of embryonic development, but in the hatched chick apparently accounts for only a small amount of all excreted nitrogen. Needham et al. (1935) established that urea production in the chick embryo parallels arginase content and, thus, is the end product of the ornithinecitrulline cycle proposed by Krebs and Henseleit (1932). Accordingly, urea reaches its maximum level on the ninth day of incubation but, with the rapid decline in arginase, falls progressively, and by the end of the incubation period attains the percentage level demonstrated in adult birds. Clementi (1914, 1946) reported arginase and, consequently, the ornithine-citrulline cycle to be absent in hatched chicks. Investigations into the synthesis of urea and metabolism of arginine and other urea cycle intermediates in mammalian tissue have been capably reviewed by Rattner (1954). Arginine synthesis is regarded as minute

Effect of the administration of cortisone on the response of chicks to the endotoxin of Salmonella pullorum.
Previous investigations conducted in our laboratory have shown that the arginase system and, consequently, the Krebs ornithine cycle, is reactivated in baby chicks experimentally infected with Salmonella pullorum (Ross et al., 1956). A similar reactivation, as evidenced by an alteration in the nitrogen excretion pattern, was demonstrated in chicks treated with the endotoxin of S. pullorum (Dool...

This study was conducted to determine effects of methyltestosterone on innate immunity and adaptive immunity against Salmonella Pullorum in dwarf chicks. In vivo experiment, comparisons of pathological sections, viable counts of bacteria, specific antibody levels, and subsets of T lymphocytes were set forth between chicks with or without 10(-7) M methyltestosterone treatment (2 d of age through...
متن کاملThe effect of Salmonella pullorum infection on amino acids of the chick.
The pathology of pullorum disease has been frequently described, but little information exists concerning the mechanism by which Salmonella pullorum exerts a damaging effect on its host. While the organism becomes quite generally distributed throughout the chick during the course of disease, the fact that it tends to be prevalent in the liver suggests the possibility of. alterations in both pro...
متن کاملSalmonella enterica serovar Pullorum persists in splenic macrophages and in the reproductive tract during persistent, disease-free carriage in chickens.
Salmonella enterica serovar Pullorum is worldwide a poultry pathogen of considerable economic importance, particularly in those countries with a developing poultry industry. In addition to the characteristic high mortality rates among young chicks, one of the features of Salmonella serovar Pullorum infection is that it persists for long periods in convalescent chicks in the absence of clinical ...

Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Pullorum (Salmonella Pullorum) is highly adapted to chickens causing an acute systemic disease that results in high mortality. Vaccination represents one approach for promoting animal health, food safety and reducing environmental persistence in Salmonella control. An important consideration is that Salmonella vaccination in poultry ...
